Hand Carved Waxes and CAD/CAM Technology
After a design sketch is colloborated on between us and the client, a wax model is then created. Depending on the design, we will either hand carve the wax model from a wax block or we will use CAD/CAM (computer aided design) technology for more detailed designs. CAD/CAM technology allows the computer to map the design and at this point any changes can be made. Now we can see a render of the design and then 3-D printing will produce the "wax" model.
The Lost Wax Process...an ancient art
After the design is sketched and waxes are created, the next stage is to get the casting done of the wax model. We use the "Lost Wax Process" which history shows was used by the ancient Egyptians and Chinese over 2000 years ago! The name lost-wax casting owes its origin to the fact that an expendable wax pattern of the item to be cast was first made of wax. (See our blog post on "The Lost Wax Process" for complete steps).
Silver, Platinum or Gold?
Our metal choices for casting include sterling silver, platinum or gold. Sterling silver is 925 pure and platinum/iridium is 90% platinum and 10% iridium blend. Gold is the metal that offers you color choices. It is available in white gold, yellow gold and rose gold. Each color can be alloyed to 10k, 14k ,18k etc. which we do in our shop. While color is a determining factor, some clients have metal allergies which certainly determines which metals can be used. The price of each metal flucuates every day in the metals market.
